  • Willin Haands & Peerie Trows Volunteering Awards recipients announced
November 20th 2025

VAS are delighted to announce the recipients of our annual volunteering awards. 42 adults received the 'Willin Haands Award' for outstanding volunteering in their communities and 6 children aged 11 or under received a 'Peerie Trows Award' for their volunteering efforts

The awards are nomination based with each person being nominated receiving a certificate of recognition for their outstanding efforts in their communities and with various volunteer involving organisations. The aim of the Awards is to recognise both formal and informal volunteering taking place everyday throughout Shetland. Again VAS are delighted with the number of nominations which were received for volunteers the length and breadth of Shetland.

49 nominations were received for 48 awardees. 42 Willin Haands (for adults aged 26 and over and 6 Peerie Trows (for children aged under 12) certificates were awarded. VAS have been sharing the stories and photos of recipients on their social media pages, in particular on their Facebook page Voluntary Action Shetland Volunteering .

Feedback and comments on the posts have been overwhelmingly positive towards the amazing voluntary services and acts of kindness the recipients provide for Shetland, including being good neighbours, providing many years service to recording and sharing Shetland’s history, helping at the local hall or clubs and organisations, committee members, supporting vulnerable folk, cleaning verges and picking up litter and fundraising to mention a few, many providing several years of volunteering.

Kathleen Williamson, Volunteer Development Worker at Voluntary Action Shetland said ‘it has been a pleasure administering the awards and reading all about the fantastic volunteering taking place throughout the Islands. Shetland would not be Shetland without all the efforts of volunteers and the kindness and community spirit taking place formally and informally throughout our Islands’

VAS would like to say a big thank you to all who nominated and a huge congratulations to all award recipients.

Each of the volunteer’s stories can be found in full on our Facebook page
